The Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA) has granted accreditation to both the undergraduate and graduate sport management programs at Neumann University. Neumann is among the first five universities in the country to receive COSMA accreditation.
The sport management undergraduate major at Neumann is designed to prepare students to blend general management skills with the specific demands of managing sports organizations. Students supplement classroom teaching with a variety of practical experiences by working in sport management settings through cooperative education placements or internships.
“Sports and entertainment are integral parts of the American marketplace and annually generate billions of dollars of economic activity,” explains Andrea Pent, associate professor of sport management at Neumann. “Students in sport management gain both the knowledge and practical experiences that are necessary for success in a variety of careers that blend business with sports.”
Undergraduates also have the option to enroll in Neumann’s sport management 4+1 program, which allows them to earn a bachelor’s and master’s degree in the field in just five years.
The graduate sport management degree is an 18-month online program, which provides flexibility, personal access to faculty members, and opportunities to network with other graduate students. According to Pent, “A master's degree in sport and entertainment management can provide the credential that you need to increase your earning potential or prepare you for an exciting career change.”
Both undergraduate and graduate programs at Neumann will become Sport and Entertainment Management programs this year, pending approval of the Pennsylvania Department of Education.
Neumann University created the sport management major in 1997, followed by the master’s degree in sport management in 1999. Before COSMA was formed, the undergraduate and graduate programs had approval from the North American Society of Sport Management.
COSMA is a specialized accrediting body that promotes and recognizes excellence in sport management education in colleges and universities at the baccalaureate and graduate levels. The organization provides external verification of program quality at institutions of higher education.
