Two Neumann Faculty Named to Irish Education 100

The Irish Voice Newspaper has named Neumann University Faculty Sr. Marguerite O’Bierne, OSF, and Dr. Gerard O’Sullivan to the 2011 Irish Education 100. The recognition lists the top figures in education across North America who have Irish heritage.

Sr. O’Bierne is vice president for mission and ministry at Neumann. She received her Ph.D. in administration from Fordham University; her M.A. in English from Millersville University; and her B.A. in English from Neumann College. Sr. O’Bierne has education experience spanning more than thirty years before coming to Neumann as an administrative intern to the president.

She has been published in Today’s Catholic Teacher and has been previously named to the Irish Education 100 in 2009 and 2010. She was also recognized as Woman of the Year by the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, Mercer County, NJ, in 2003 and received the St. John Neumann Outstanding Alumni Award in 2006. Sr. O’Bierne also serves on the Board of Trustees at Drexel Neumann Academy and the Irish-American Business Chamber and Network. O’Bierne hails from County Sligo.

Gerard O’Sullivan is vice president for academic affairs and professor of English and theology at Neumann. Dr. O’Sullivan received his Ph.D. in comparative literature and literary theory from The University of Pennsylvania; a master’s degree in philosophical theology from Vanderbilt University; and a baccalaureate degree from Fordham University, where he was elected to the Tau Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa.

He serves as a peer reviewer for The Journal of Catholic Higher Education, an evaluator for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, a visitor and evaluator for the Pennsylvania Department of Education, and an active member of the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). Dr. O’Sullivan has published numerous chapters, essays and articles in books and peer-reviewed journals. O’Sullivan’s father was from Cork and his mother from Leitrim.

Sr. O’Bierne and Dr. O’Sullivan will both be recognized at a reception at the New York City home of Irish Consul Noel Kilkenny on December 14.
