Alana Lee ’02, a communications graduate, appears in an independent film The North Star which opened in Philadelphia in May 2013.
The movie is written and directed by Thomas K. Phillips and is based on the true story of Ben Jones. Jones was a slave who escaped from a Virginia plantation in the 1840s and made his way to Pennsylvania with the help of local Quakers. Jones is played by former Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter.
Lee plays Sarah, a teacher who falls in love with Jones.
“I read the script twice and right away I took an interest in the role of Sarah. I felt a connection with Sarah's character. I have never acted in a period movie nor a movie that was based on real-life events. I was a little nervous but willing to take that challenge. They held auditions for two days and there were over 100 women who auditioned for the role of Sarah,” Lee explained.
In addition to starring in the movie, Lee teaches first grade at Christ the Teacher School in Newark, Delaware.
