Neumann University will present its Presidential Humanitarian Award to H. Edward and Ellen M. Hanway on Saturday, April 6, at its fourteenth annual Scholarship Gala. The event is scheduled for the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts in the Samuel M. V. Hamilton Building at 128 North Broad Street.
The University presents this award annually to people whose lives reflects a devotion to religious and family values; dedication to excellence; value for philanthropy and giving back; willingness to take risks in the pursuit of vision; and a demonstrated value for education and a positive intellectual life.
H. Edward and Ellen M. Hanway
H. Edward Hanway is chairman of the Drexel Neumann Academy Board of Trustees. The Academy is an independent Catholic school in Chester, Pennsylvania, co-sponsored by Neumann University, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, Saint Katharine Drexel Parish, and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Hanway is also chairman emeritus of CIGNA Corporation, where he served as chairman and chief executive officer from 2000 to 2009, and chairman of the Faith in the Future Foundation, which provides strategic management and operational oversight for the 17 Catholic high schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Ellen M. Hanway embodies the principles and values of a Catholic education. She attended Nativity BVM Parish School and Notre Dame High School before graduating from the Keystone School of Business in 1971. An ardent supporter of Catholic education, she is a past board member of Drexel Neumann Academy and St. Francis de Sales Lenni Parish Council and Home and School Association.
Past Presidential Humanitarian Award recipients include Bill Baldini, Sr. Leslie Birks, OSF, Pat Ciarrocchi, Congressman Patrick L. Meehan, Esq., Jim Murray, and Brian Tierney.
