Neumann University’s fully online degree program in Public Safety Administration (PSA), now in its second year, is geared towards individuals currently working as police officers, firefighters, paramedics or those in similar career in fields.

The intent and design of the degree program is to enhance the foundation of administration and leadership for anyone associated with the public safety sector.

The online program offers adult learners an exciting option for their future. Students complete their work from the comfort of their own home, with no set login times.

“This is perfect for people in our type of career. Many of us work shift work, so to be able to complete the degree online is an amazing opportunity,” said Beth McCall, a paramedic at Chester County Hospital.

Students coming into the program receive college credits for various certifications they have completed. These certifications are in line with the public safety profession of each student.

Ed Glassman, deputy chief in the Camden Fire Department and PSA student, had over 100 certifications that he brought to Neumann. Many of those certifications turned into earned credits for him.

“Flexibility was a very important aspect for me. I was saying to my wife for years that I had to do this, and I decided to after talking with Jil (Donnelly, director of virtual learning),” Glassman said.

Tom Johnson is a captain in the Upper Darby Police Department and a volunteer firefighter. He successfully manages to juggle his work responsibilities, school duties and family life. His schedule is going to become even more intense this September when Pope Francis comes to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families.

“As a working adult with pretty significant working responsibilities, I needed a flexible schedule. The staff has been understanding, which is huge. They work with me and treat me as an adult,” Johnson said.

For many of the students in the PSA program, completing or obtaining their college degree was a life-long goal. As their careers flourished and families grew, this goal was put on the back burner. With the opportunities for learning and the flexibility offered by the Neumann University PSA program, students are able to accomplish this goal.

“I am loving it but it’s challenging. I think coming back as an adult, I appreciate my education more and the challenges more,” McCall said.
