Office of Academic Affairs

Dear Colleagues,

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and other public health officials are predicting that the H1N1 flu virus will return in the fall. This virus is highly contagious. While the influenza virus is more virulent in persons 5 to 25 years of age it can infect anyone, of any age.

Neumann University’s Health Services staff members are tracking influenza information provided by the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PaDOH). We will provide members of the University community with updated information as it becomes available.

In compliance with CDC and PaDOH recommendations, Neumann University will require any student (including adult and graduate students) with a fever and flu-like symptoms to follow CDC self-isolation guidelines and not attend classes or any public gatherings while ill.

Any student living in the residence halls who exhibits flu-like symptoms will be required to return home to recover. No student will be permitted to return to campus until at least 24 hours have passed without fever.  Returning students must be able to maintain a normal body temperature without the aid of fever-reducing medications such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen. Students from countries other than the United States or those unable to return home for any reason will be cared for according to an isolation plan prepared by the Office of Health Services and the Dean of Students.

Please be mindful of these community health measures when taking attendance and assessing student performance in your courses this fall.  In cases of extended absence due to illness please call the attention of your students to Neumann’s “Alternative Instructional Equivalencies by Hour” charts, as mandated by PDE, on pages 55-59 of the 2009-10 Neumann University Undergraduate Catalog and pages 32-36 of the 2009-10 Neumann University Graduate Catalog.   Students should be expected to remain current with their coursework by online and other means, whenever possible and reasonable.

Likewise, arrangements should be made for students in clinical and field placements to allow them to meet course expectations through alternate and additional scheduling, whenever possible and reasonable. I ask that Division Deans and their faculties consult on strategies to assist affected students with timely completion of courses with clinical and field components.  Also, Division Deans should consult with faculty on course coverage plans in anticipation of possible extended absences.

Neumann University’s Office of Health Services will be distributing information about prevention strategies to all students, faculty, and staff, along with updated information from the CDC.  Prevention is key to stopping the spread of  H1N1 or any other seasonal flu.  Information and updates about H1N1 may be found at: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation with these community health measures and for all that you do for Neumann University.

Yours sincerely,

Gerard P. O'Sullivan
