Special Initiatives
Neumann College received grant funding in collaboration with the University
of Pennsylvania to partner with the Chester Community Charter School to
improve reading achievement of at risk students in low-income communities.
Funding was received to hire three tutoring program coordinators, three
federal work study students, and service learning students. In this program,
students enrolled in EDU 360: Language Arts II Methods will tutor twenty
third grade students who are at risk of reading failure. The academic
progress of these third graders will be monitored during this school year
and the results of the partnership's efforts will be shared with school
staff and service learning students at Neumann.
Also, our Teacher education program, in collaboration with Elwyn Services'
Division of Education, and Wallingford-Swarthmore School District has
formed a unique partnership: The NEW-S Project. The NEW-S Project (Neumann,
Elwyn, Wallingford-Swarthmore) will foster opportunities for students
who attend Swarthmore-Rutledge Elementary school and The Kids' Place Kindergarten
and who have Autism Spectrum Disorders to receive instruction and related
services programming in classrooms with typically developing peers. Neumann
College students will receive training in this specialized area and complete
field experience and/or student teaching experiences in inclusive classrooms.
All members of the Swarthmore-Rutledge School and The Kids' Place community
(students, family, staff) along with Neumann College students, will be
involved in this exciting, data-driven, cutting edge project. On-site
specialists from Elwyn and Neumann College will provide intensive training
and support in a program designed to improve the quality of education
for all SRS, The Kids' Place, and Neumann College students, while including
SRS and The Kids' Place parents in this partnership.
Neumann College's teacher education program is very proud and excited
to be part of this unique endeavor that is highly supported by the Pennsylvania
Department of Education.
