About Us Programs Admission Requirements Links/Resources Contact Us

As of Fall 2017, Neumann University is no longer accepting applications to our Certificate Programs in Spiritual Formation and Direction (SFD), including the 24-credit Certificate in Spiritual Formation and Direction and the 15-credit Certificate of Advanced Study in Spiritual Formation & Direction Supervision (CAS). The SFD program will close in May 2018, when our current cohort of students completes their studies.

If you are one of the many graduates, supervisors or faculty members who have participated in our Spiritual Formation and Direction programs over the years, please watch for coming information on a celebration of the contributions of this program, tentatively planned for spring 2018.

If you find yourself in serious and spiritual conversations – in formal or informal settings – then you may be experiencing a call to become a spiritual director. If others are seeking you out for support, guidance, and understanding as they follow the lead of God’s spirit, then you could benefit by coming into the spiritual formation and direction program at Neumann University.

Spiritual Formation and Direction is a conversation in which one person assists another to recognize and respond to God’s presence and action. When brought to spiritual direction all of our relationships hold the potential to deepen and enrich our very being. Our dedicated and experienced faculty can assist you in describing, interpreting, and evaluating your own experience so you can guide others through the same process.

All facets of the program focus on ecumenical and interfaith spiritual ministry to equip you to help those who desire to live reflectively and respond to life’s challenges. In particular, education for the role of the director (such as midwife or companion) involves practice and assessment of theological/spiritual and psychological methods for understanding the spiritual journey. We are an ecumenical group of women and men exploring diverse spiritual traditions and practicing the art of spiritual companioning. As an adult learning community, we challenge, support, and encourage one another as we journey through faith.

The spiritual formation & direction program at Neumann University welcomes experienced and aspiring directors into a vibrant learning community to practice the art of spiritual companioning. Spiritual formation and direction is all about relationships: with God, ourselves, our family, our church, with those we love, and those we find hard to love, and with our earth and our place in the universe.
