AcademicsService-Learning at Neumann College. . . living and learning in the Franciscan way.
Service-Learning combines academic study and community service in ways that enhance students’ learning. It offers students the exciting opportunity to learn about almost any subject in arts, business, the humanities, and the social and natural sciences by engaging in service as part of their normal coursework. The service work can help students better understand the abstract concepts presented in their classes. Likewise, the ideas learned in class provide a framework for students to better understand the human and social problems they encounter in their community engagement.
Academic Service-Learning is a concrete expression of Neumann’s mission as a Catholic college in the Franciscan tradition. Neumann’s mission statement recognizes that knowledge while valuable in itself is to be used in the service of others. The Service-Learning experience provides a student with increased awareness of one’s social responsibility while strengthening their social, intellectual and ethical capacities. As a result, students become active rather than passive learners, connecting their academic experiences with community-based service.
How does Service-Learning work? Engaging in service as part of a course can contribute to learning about course content just as reading texts, watching films, conducting experiments in labs or going on field trips. In a Service-Learning course, service is one of the kinds of homework students undertake to learn about their subject matter. The student can arrange their service site or be place in a site to fulfill the service requirement of their course. Learning occurs through an array of reflection activities and assignments that help students connect their service experiences to the courses ideas, hypotheses, theories and methods. The reflection component of Service-Learning invites student to consider their service experiences in light of Catholic social thought and the Franciscan worldview.
