When Lysette Artis graduated high school, she wasn't sure what she
wanted to do. So, she took a year off to explore. "I wanted to
make sure that if I chose to go to college it was the right fit."
Upon visiting one of her closest friends at Neumann College, Lysette
found her fit. The friendly atmosphere and small campus size is what
reeled her in. "Neumann was small enough that I didn't feel like
a number, but it wasn't so small that I felt like I was in a fish
bowl." Now a senior, Lysette reflects, "It was fate. I feel
so connected, like I was supposed to come to here."
Although each year at Neumann has been very different, she is truly
enjoying her college experience. "I found once I became involved
in one thing, I couldn't help getting involved in many things. I
am now involved so deeply with so many activities, it's going to
be hard to leave here."
Having worn the hat of family event planner many times, Lysette
chose communications and media arts as a major aiming for a career
in event planning and public relations. Her long term goal is
to own her own business. "I like the excitement of planning
special events and preparing for others to enjoy a special time."
She feels the courses at Neumann are training her well for her
career. "We spend every semester focusing on a different
part of the major so that we learn it well enough to really know
each area of communications, whether it is graphic design or public
relations, etc."
Lysette credits Neumann teachers and administration for her academic
satisfaction and positive college experience. "Teachers here
really care about you. They make you feel you can go to them if
you need help. I also like the staff's 'can do' attitude. If I
come up with an idea for a new activity or some new approach,
the approach here is 'What can we do to make your idea happen?.
Everyone here encourages you and nurtures your idea to bring it
to life. They make you feel like you're contributing to the entire
college community"
As the youngest in her family, the only girl, and the only person
to go away to college, Lysette says she's learned a lot about
herself at Neumann. "I have proven that I can stand on my
own. I can succeed. I will be a stronger, smarter person leaving
here than coming in-that's for sure."
