According to Jillian Lawlor, attending Neumann College has become
an unofficial family tradition. Having had two cousins come to Neumann
as well, she heard many recommendations for the College. Even if she
had had no previous relatives attend, Jillian says, she still would
have chosen Neumann because it provided exactly what she wanted-a
warm, friendly atmosphere with small class sizes, good religious values,
and a major in communication arts.
Jillian aspires to be a copywriter for an ad agency, a goal Neumann's
communication and media arts program is helping her achieve. "I
like using my creative talents and thought working in the television
world seemed fun, not boring." Most importantly, however, she
just wants to be "happy and successful."
A freshman, Jillian confesses to some initial homesickness when
she first arrived on campus. Now, she can't get enough of college
life. "I love it here!" she exclaims. "Everyone
I meet is great. I love my roommates and the relationship we have
developed. I live in a suite with six girls. We all get along
so well. It's amazing. They have made it a lot easier to get over
my initial homesickness and help relieve the stress that class
work creates." She feels that the fun times she's had with
them will definitely create her most lasting memories of Neumann.
Right now, Jillian is focused on getting good grades. "Even
though I'm enjoying myself socially, classes come first. I am
doing very, very well."
Another aspect of her Neumann College life which contributes
to Jillian's positive experience is her Campus Ministry involvement.
Although a non-Catholic, she says she possesses strong Christian
values and looked for good moral reinforcement in her college
choice. She feels it is important for her to give back and serve
others in a meaningful way. As Campus Ministry coordinator for
the St. Francis Inn in northeast Philadelphia, she works in a
soup kitchen and helps serve meals to the needy. "The people
I get to meet are so respectful, thankful, and giving. I like
being surrounded by good, caring people." She says this is
what she's found throughout Neumann College and at the St. Francis
Inn.
"Even though Neumann is a small college, it has big opportunities,"
she says. "There are so many things you can do here. There
are concerts, plays, religious events, community service and a
diverse course offering. I definitely feel I made the right choice
to come to Neumann."
