One of the highest priorities during Jack Winn's college search was
class size. Having had a severe case of dyslexia his entire life,
he felt he needed a small, teacher-to-student ratio to be an effective
learner and achieve academic success. He found what he was looking
for at Neumann, and also discovered an exceptional support system
consisting of excellent teachers and the ARC. ARC is Neumann's John
C. Ford Academic Resource Center which provides individualized tutoring
and classroom support to students who need assistance.
"My teachers have been great and give me as much time and
attention as I need to learn and grasp concepts. I take all my tests
in the ARC and they have everything ready for me when I need it,"
he says. "I'm on the dean's list even with my learning disability."
Inspired by his mom, a middle school English teacher, Jack is enrolled
as an elementary education major. "I enjoy children and like
being around them," he says. Short term he has set his sights
on teaching third grade. Long term, however, Jack says, "I
think I want to be a principal someday and get into the administrative
end of education."
Jack finds the courses he's taking at Neumann are providing him
with a solid, practical foundation for his future classroom teaching
experiences. "I'm learning a lot. All the teachers have been
great. One of the best things I've experienced here is that I
really want to be in class. I enjoy it. People at Neumann in general
are so focused on helping you and making you succeed. They go
the extra mile."
Jack has also found his involvement in sports has helped him
fit right in. In fact, he refers to his roller hockey and lacrosse
teammates as "extended family." Jack says, "I now
have an even bigger family and my teammates are all my brothers.
I feel I made the right choice to come here."
