The study of Biology contributes to an understanding of living
things from the molecular to the community level. A Bachelor of Science
degree in Biological Science prepares the student for careers in
industrial, governmental, clinical, and academic settings which require
biological expertise. The degree also serves as preparation for graduate
study and medical careers. The science faculty in the Division of Arts
and Sciences provides pre-medical advisement for students who are contemplating
a career in medicine as well as information pertaining to Neumann University's
Articulation Agreements with The New York College of Chiropractic Medicine
in Seneca Falls, NY and the New York College of Podiatric Medicine in
New York, NY. Preparation for Secondary Teacher Certification in Biology
and General Science, and certification eligibility for Clinical Laboratory
Science can also be achieved through this major. Students majoring in
Biological Science may also choose a sequence of Biology/Clinical Laboratory
Science courses to be eligible to write to appropriate certifying agencies
requesting certification in one of three clinical areas: clinical biochemistry,
clinical hematology, or clinical microbiology. The Biology/Clinical Laboratory
Science track is approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical
Laboratory Science, 8410 W. Bryn Mawr, Suite 670, Chicago, IL 60631-3415,
Phone 1-773-714-8880.
Small class size and hands-on experiential learning make the Biology program
at Neumann University unique. Almost all of the biology courses include laboratories.
Opportunities for independent research on campus are available. In addition,
Biological Science majors are required to participate in off-campus research
or applied science during the senior year through participation in the
University's Cooperative Education Program. This research experience provides
students with the opportunity to apply, in an occupational setting, the
knowledge and skills gained in the classroom. Participating institutions
have included Smith Kline Bio-Science Laboratories, Pennsylvania State
Police -Lima Regional Crime Labs, Philadelphia Zoological Society, Crozer-Chester
Medical Center, the Academy of Natural Sciences, Raytheon Environmental
Services, and the Camden Aquarium. These off -campus contacts frequently
lead to career opportunities.
