The ability to communicate effectively is perhaps the most important
characteristic needed for success in both academic and professional environments.
Effective communication means oral and written competence, skill with
contemporary production techniques, and familiarity with today's communications
media. The student majoring in Communication Arts acquires these
broad proficiencies while, at the same time, developing a specialization
in performance, production, or writing. The flexibility of the program
allows the student to pursue an academic minor in addition to the major,
or even to major in another discipline concurrently with Communication
Arts. Preparation for Secondary Teacher Certification in English can also
be achieved through this major.
Communication Arts majors can practice writing and production techniques
by contributing either to Canticle, the college literary arts magazine
(presented in both printed and electronic form), or to The Campus Press,
the college newspaper.
