The World We Live In: What Should
We Do About Korea, Iran & Russia?

Do you have trouble understanding what is
happening in the world? Does the news baffle
you at times? During this five-week course,
you will explore the future of the world’s food,
population, and health concerns; Middle Eastern
issues, world trade; and the role of the U.S. in
war and peace. The course will be taught with
discussion, slides and visual aids. Come ready

Everything You Always Wanted
To Know About Opera But Were
Afraid To Ask

Whether you belong to the group who doesn’t
have “a clue” about opera, feel intimidated by it or
would simply like to learn a little bit about it—
or you are among those who already enjoy this
unique art form and would like to expand your
knowledge of it, this class is for you. The Atlantic
Coast Opera Festival will present an introduction
to the basics of opera, including terminology,
different voice types, composers, and performers.
Faculty will sample with the class the most popular
and exciting arias of the repertoire along with
their most-celebrated performers.

History Through Film, Part III
A film, lecture series that examines five films, each centering on an historical topic. Dr. Richard Donagher will follow with a discussion exploring how well each film depicts the historical events covered.

Becket (1964), starring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole. This movie explores the tragic consequences of the quarrel between two friends, King Henry II of England and Thomas A. Becket, over royal power and Church independence.

Paths of Glory (1957), directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, and Adolphe Menjou. This anti-war film is set in World War I France.

The Shop on Main Street (1965). The Holocaust is revisited in the personal tale of a Jewish shopkeeper, played by Ida Kaminska, in Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia. The movie was a product of the Prague Spring, later crushed by Soviet tanks.

Native Son (1986), starring Matt Dillon, Elizabeth McGovern, Oprah Winfrey, and Victor Love. This is a movie version of African American writer Richard Wright’s novel of a tragic accident complicated by racism.

Dr. Strangelove (1964), directed by Stanley Kubrick and starring Peter Sellers and George C. Scott. This movie comedy evokes many of fears and the paranoia of the Cold War era.

Understanding the Russian Language (Russian for Beginners)
Do you know that the last letter of the Russian alphabet looks like a backward “R”? Do you know how to pronounce the name of the new Russian President? This course includes bits of everything from useful words and phrases to the culture, customs and aspects of daily Russian Life.

Sketching
This course covers blending, shading, perspective, and form using a variety of media. Please bring 2B and 4B pencils, a kneaded eraser, and a 14² x 17² or 11² x 14² sketchpad to the first class.

Basic Yoga
Improve your vitality, strength, and flexibility. Designed specifically for less flexible beginners,
seniors, or those who want to stay active without exercising strenuously, this program stresses gentle stretching exercises. Coordinating breath with movement and simple postures to will help muscles and joints regain mobility. Participants are asked to consult a physician prior to registration; eat a light breakfast two hours before class; and bring a large blanket, two towels, and an extra thick Yoga Sticky (available from most large general merchandise stores).

Introduction to Excel (Microsoft Office 2007)
This course will introduce Microsoft Excel and the skills required to access and utilize the Excel
Application Window, number formats, changing column widths & row heights, entering text &
numbers, changing the contents of cells, saving the worksheet, adjusting, inserting, and merging
rows and columns, previewing before you print, printing, entering basic formula, doing math,
combining operations, editing formulas, using AutoSum, cell addresses in formulas, AutoComplete, working with various functions, formatting worksheet appearance.

World Religions
Have you wondered why there are so many religions in the world? Have you pondered the different beliefs people hold and the different ways they worship God? This course seeks to answer the basic questions about the seven largest religions in the world. The course will be taught using slides, lecture, discussion, and will be very interactive. Dr. Ellis has traveled to the site of each of these religions and met with local followers of the faith. He has been studying
and teaching about world religions for forty years.

Watercolor Painting
This class will give both new and experienced participants personalized instruction on proper
brush handling, color mixing, and composition. Techniques will be applied to landscapes,
seascapes, and still life. Frequent demonstrations are given. Please bring an 11² x 14² sketchpad
and HB pencils to the first class. Other supplies will be discussed at that time.

Computers Level I (Microsoft Word 2007)
The beginner class is for those with little or no experience using computers. These classes are
designed to ensure that a solid core of fundamental skills are taught, applied, and then practiced
by the participants. Classes will promote confidence in moving forward at home or in the office.
Participants will have ample time to work on skills by participating in exercises (or labs) related
to each class. Emphasis will be placed on fun and learning in a relaxed and focused approach to the material. Access to a computer and the internet outside of the class time is vital to success in this class. For those without personal computers at home, the public library has computers available to those with a valid library card.

Computers Level II (Microsoft Word 2007)
This class is designed for those participants who have successfully taken the beginner class and
specifically reinforces concepts and key ideas through a practical, exercise-based format.The intermediate class allows the participant to put into action much of what was covered in the beginner class; however, the focus is on application and practice under the guidance of the presenter. There will be little or no lecture, instead each week participants will work on interactive assignments, which will be completed during the two-hour period. This class is a realistic transition for those interested in taking the Advanced Beginners Class. Topic areas included
Drag and Drop, Cut, Copy and Paste, Navigation, File Types, File Management, Additional Printing
Options, Graphics, Setting Word Preferences, Page Setup, Margins, Indents and Breaks.

Computers Level III (Microsoft Office 2007)
The Level III class was created for participants who have successfully completed the other two
levels and are looking to explore more advanced topics in the computing field. This class covers a
practical side of working with and managing computers, which many people may not be aware.
Topics discussed in class will allow participant to apply lessons learned to their home PCs.
Participants are expected to complete homebased tasks each week, in order to keep pace with
the class content. Topics in the computing area cover: installing and removing software; setting
mouse, power and resolution options; running system utilities (defragment hard drive); configuring basic security systems (Windows Defender) and Microsoft updates. Word topics cover: managing and manipulating images, borders and shading; using templates; converting Word document to web pages; creating tables; and working with advanced tool bars. The final
section deals with the Internet. Topics here include browser settings (IE 7 and Mozilla Firefox), importing/exporting contact lists, and information searching with Froogle and WebMD.

Everyone experiences changes throughout life. If we are open to changes in a positive way, we
can attain personal and spiritual growth toward our full potential. This class will discuss the three phases of transition, and use creative arts (journaling, poetry, literature, music, movies, and more) to “create” a new perspective on change and discover the gift of hope that it offers for the future.

The Gift of Change Part II: Finding Hope (and More) in Life’s Transitions Creatively
No pre-requisites required. This class explores deeply the issues involved in finding hope in life’s transitions, including letting go/trust, gratitude/joy, life lessons/wisdom, grace/faith, and forgiveness/acceptance. These issues will be illustrated through the creative arts. The class will integrate the lessons learned from past experiences in life changes into a hopeful and meaningful new path for the future.

This course continues to build on current knowledge of Excel. With the Intermediate Excel sessions you will perform some review exercises of introductory skills, learn functions such as

St. Augustine: From Sinner to Saint to Doctor of the Church
Augustine lived during a transitional period in history; the Roman Empire and its culture were
in decline, while Christianity was ascending. Augustine’s life is especially relevant and compelling in our modern world. He was an educated Roman citizen caught up in the culture of the day only to find it wanting. In his search for the truth, Augustine finds God, transforms his life, and becomes one of the most influential Christian philosophers of all time. For his interpretation
of the Bible and his instruction on Christian Doctrine, he was later named Doctor of the Church.

Buying Your First Home
This class covers mortgage prequalification and provides a worksheet. Buyers estimate of closing
costs, interest rate tables, and customary procedures for our area will be discussed. This class
will also review an information sheet from the time of the Agreement of Sale until settlement.

• Financing — both conventional & government backed loans. Overview of special programs for first-time buyers, along with variations of “fixed rate” and adjustable mortgage programs.

• Contract Law — In-depth review of the Agreement of Sale and all addendums a buyer is expected to sign when making an offer. Both “mandatory” and “optional” endorsements are discussed, along with various pre-purchase testing.

• Home Inspections — Why have a home inspection done? What is covered, what a buyer can learn from the inspection. Also“Home Warranty” coverage. How to take title and the legalities involved. How to choose a real estate agent.
