AcademicsLife Long Learning at Neumann College (LINC)History
The Life Long Learning program at Neumann College was founded in 1997. It began with periodic meetings for seniors in the Aston area. A group of enthusiastic individuals joined to plan Continuing Education programs. Senior Saturday Seminars were soon developed, and offered in the Spring and Fall 1999, 2000 and 2001. In 1999, the College applied for and received development status as an affiliate, and in 2001 gained affiliate status in the Elderhostel Institute Network (EIN).
The Elderhostel Institute Network is a voluntary association of over 300 independent Institutes for Learning in Retirement (ILR) in the United States, Canada and Bermuda. The Network is a component of Elderhostel, Inc. The EIN shares the goal of Neumann College to support life long learning. Both EIN and Neumann College value the inherent strengths of older learners, and both foster the empowerment of people through education.
An Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) is an organization of mature adults who share a love of learning. It operates in affiliation with the college. The mission of an ILR is to serve adults in the local community by offering a non-credit academic program geared to their interests and talents. An ILR is thus a center for intellectual and social activity which welcomes older adults into the life of the college. The Lifelong Learning Program at Neumann College (LINC) is an "ILR."
