Nursing
Betty Neuman Systems Model

Welcome

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the Neuman Systems Model Website!
I am, indeed pleased to have you join the increasing cadre of Neuman Systems Model users and developers; those who foresee the future potential of the model for facilitating professional nursing, appropriate for all client care settings, in the new millennium.

Please accept my very best wishes for your future personal and professional success under the directive of the Neuman Systems Model. I will be delighted to hear about your progress with my work.

TEL/FAX: BETTY NEUMAN, Ph.D., FAAN. (740) 749-3322.

Purpose: To provide access to information about the Neuman Systems Model and to promote dialogue among those dedicated to the knowledge and development of the science of nursing.

Description: The Neuman Systems Model provides a comprehensive, system based conceptual framework. Originally designed to be used in nursing it can be used by other health professions.

The purpose of the model is to provide a unifying focus for approaching a wide range of nursing concerns and for understanding basic nursing phenomena: the client, the environment, health and nursing.

The model represents the client within the system perspective, wholistically and multi-dimensionally. It illustrates the components of five interacting client variables; physiological, psychological, developmental, sociocultural and spiritual in relation to environmental influences upon the client as a system consisting of basic structure, lines of resistance and lines of defense.

The environment is broadly defines all internal and external factors or influences surrounding the identified client or client system. Environment consists of three dimensions: internal environment, external environment and created environment.

The health of the client is envisioned as being at various levels within a normal range, rising or falling throughout the life span related to adjustment by the client system to environmental stressors.

The major concern of nursing is keeping the client system stable throughout constant life changes with accuracy both in assessing the effects of environmental stressors and in assisting client adjustments required for optimal level wellness through primary, secondary and tertiary prevention strategies as intervention.

The Neuman Systems Model is used at all levels of nursing education from diploma through doctorate. The model is used in many clinical areas in institutional and community nursing practice at national and international sites. Additionally, the model is used in physical therapy programs and in nurse anesthesia.

The conduct of research continues to grow with more than 50 dissertations, 75 masters' theses and 65 other reports of research between 1985 and 1998 with a few studies prior to 1985.

Further information about the model is available through Diana Newman, R.N., Ed.D., at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (Diana.Newman@mcphs.edu) or through the publications of Betty Neuman, Ph. D. FAAN and others referenced in the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health. (cinahl@cinahl.com)
