Author Candace Fleming read her story, Boxes for Katje, to children from the Child Development Center on October 4. Fleming traveled to campus from Chicago to receive the sixth Bock Book Award for Children's Literature, presented annually by Neumann. Listening to the story are (from left) Colin Dendler of Telford, Julia Oppelt of Aston, Steven Delle Monache of Mantua, NJ, and Kiley Boyd of Aston.
The book gives young readers an insight into the fact that each individual can make a difference in the world. Boxes for Katje tells the story of a Dutch family that is poverty-stricken in the aftermath of World War II. They patch their old, worn clothing and do without everyday items like soap and milk. One morning, Katje receives a box filled with soap and socks and chocolate -- sent by Rosie, an American girl from Indiana. The resulting relationship between the girls changes both them and their neighbors forever.
