Neumann, Swarthmore Groups to Perform in
Concert
The Neumann College Concert Chorale and the Swarthmore Chorale will
perform Beethoven's Mass in C Major together on Friday, April
28, at 8 p.m. in Neumann's Meagher Theatre. The joint performance
is a special event to mark the 30th anniversary of both groups,
which were founded in 1976.
The Delaware County Symphony will accompany the chorales in the
performance of the piece, which Beethoven composed in 1807 on a
commission from an Austrian prince. By this point in his career,
Beethoven's status as a composer was assured, but he had never before
set the words of the Mass to music. The Mass in C Major,
however, is known for an intensely personal and vividly dramatic
response to the liturgical texts.
For 30 years, the Neumann College Concert Chorale and Swarthmore
Chorale have celebrated the joy of music by providing opportunities
for students and community members to gain experience in group and
ensemble singing. Under the direction of Dr. Yukiko Ishida, the
Neumann Concert Chorale performs an annual holiday concert of traditional
songs and a spring concert of seasonal music, as well as other performances
upon request.
General admission to the joint 30th anniversary concert is $8,
with students and senior citizens paying $5 each. For more information
and to reserve tickets, call 610-558-5626.
The Chorale is one of seven groups that comprise the Arts Guild
at Neumann College. Other organizations are Center Stage Productions,
the Cultural Arts Forum, the Delaware County Symphony, the College
Jazz Band, the College Theater Ensemble, and Stages of Imagination
Children's Theater. Together, these groups draw almost 15,000 people
to campus each year.
