Neumann College to Honor Leaders in Catholic Youth Sport
Neumann
College will present its second annual awards for Leadership in Catholic Youth
Sport in May. The College is currently accepting nominations for these awards
in three categories: elementary-level coaching (grades 1-8), secondary-level coaching
(grades 9-12) and lifetime achievement. The coaching awards are open to coaches
of CYO or school teams. The deadline for nominations is March 15.
The awards
recognize leaders who have had a positive impact upon young athletes who play
on teams sponsored by Catholic organizations in the Camden and Wilmington dioceses
and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
The coaching awards will acknowledge
two people (one elementary-level and one secondary-level coach) who model behavior
reflective of Catholic teachings and encourage the youth athletic experience to
include opportunities for learning character development, good sportsmanship and
spiritual formation. The lifetime achievement honoree will be a courageous leader
who espouses Catholic values and who has positively influenced youth sports by
creating, fostering and supporting an environment that includes spiritual growth
and character development.
The Center
for Sport, Spirituality and Character Development and the Sport Management
program at Neumann College are co-sponsoring the awards. Founded in 1999, the
Center is dedicated to promoting the inherent power of good in sports and to using
sports as a vehicle for spiritual, ethical and emotional growth. The Sport Management
program, part of the Neumann curriculum since 1998, is business-based and prepares undergraduate and graduate students
for careers in sports marketing, finance, event management, and athletic and recreation
administration.
There are hundreds of people in this region who teach
positive values and embody good sportsmanship every day, says Dr. Ed Hastings,
director of the Center. These awards are meant to generate greater awareness
of their outstanding contributions.
