In the Aftermath of Katrina, the College Offers to Help

True to its Franciscan mission, the College community, in collaboration with the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, is responding to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in a variety of ways.

  • The Office of Admissions found a place in Living and Learning Center II for Ashlee Diggs, an 18-year-old student who had traveled to Xavier University in New Orleans to study pharmacology. On the advice of her parents, she left the city a day before Katrina hit and returned home to Maryland. When her father called Neumann about enrolling Ashlee here, the Admissions staff responded quickly and reserved one of the last available rooms for her. On September 2, when she arrived on campus, she received a warm welcome from her suitemates, a complete set of bedding (sheets, comforter, pillows and headrest), an individual orientation, and help building a class schedule.

  • The Sisters of St. Francis have agreed to assist a Physical Therapy student and his family who lost everything in the disaster. He, his spouse and three children will be housed by the Sisters while he continues his PT studies on weekends here and tries to find a position and a new home in the area.

  • The Student Government Board staffed a table in the lobby of Bachmann Main Building in early September to collect donations for the victims of Katrina.

  • The Student Activities Board has agreed to donate a portion of all money raised by fall semester activities to assist victims through Catholic Charities.

  • The Office of Student Activities is attempting to reschedule its annual blood drive for early October to help refresh the Red Cross blood supply as quickly as possible.

  • The College is accepting donations to be sent through Catholic Charities to the victims in the affected Gulf Coast areas. To donate, call the Office of Mission and Ministry at 610-558-5511.

Details about these and other outreach efforts will be updated as information becomes available.
