Theater Ensemble to Stage The Playboy of the Western World

The College Theater Ensemble will stage John Millington Synge's The Playboy of the Western World on March 16-19 in the Meagher Theatre. Shows are scheduled for 8 p.m. on March 16, 17 and 18 and for 2 p.m. on March 19. General admission is $10. Tickets for students of any age (with a student ID) and senior citizens are just $5.

One of the funniest plays in Western literature, Synge's The Playboy of the Western World is an undisputed masterpiece of the Irish Renaissance. Set in the back-country of western Ireland at the turn of the twentieth century, Playboy shows what happens when Christy Mahon, a young stranger with a tall tale, shows up one night at a local pub.

Idolized by men and coveted by women for his supposedly daring crimes, Christy feeds off the adulation of the townsfolk and begins to see himself as a dangerous romantic adventurer, a "playboy of the western world." This comedy of delusion and redemption, spoken in the gorgeous musical English of rural Ireland, is part of a larger celebration of Irish culture, which includes plenty of live authentic Irish music and song at each performance.

The Theater Ensemble is the resident performing company at Neumann College, comprised of students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members. The group has been producing plays continuously since 1984 under the artistic direction of Terence Gleeson.

The Ensemble is one of seven groups that comprise the Arts Guild at Neumann College. Other organizations are Center Stage Productions, the Cultural Arts Forum, the Delaware County Symphony, the Neumann College Concert Chorale, the Neumann College Jazz Band, and Stages of Imagination Children's Theater.

Neumann College is located in the heart of Delaware County and is easily accessible from I-95, Rt. 476 and Rt. 1. Free parking is available on campus, directly adjacent to the Life Center, which houses the Meagher Theatre. For directions, please click here.
