Softball Team Wins PAC Championship
On Sunday, May 7, the softball team won the 2006 PAC Tournament
title from reigning champion and tournament host College Misericordia,
2-1, earning Neumann's first PAC championship and first automatic
NCAA berth in school history. The team will learn where they play
their first NCAA tournament game when the Division III softball
pairings are released on Monday, May 8.
Under Head Coach Bill Saar, the team has compiled a record of 30-11
this year, breaking the school record for most wins in a season
and recording the Knights first winning season since 1986.
Led by the MVP performance of freshman pitcher Angela Sebasto,
who was 3-0 with a 0.37 ERA in the double-elimination tournament,
the softball team took the title in its second game on Sunday after
losing to College Misericordia 5-0 earlier in the day. The win also
made Coach Saar (61-52) the winningest coach in the history of the
Neumann softball program.
In the title game, Sebasto allowed five hits and struck out six,
to record her 16th win this season. Teammate Kristen Lawlor scored
the go-ahead run after Danielle Hayes reached on an error in the
sixth inning.
Trailing 1-0, Neumann tied the score in the bottom of the fourth.
Hayes led off with a walk and moved to second on fielder's choice.
She came around to score the game tying run on an error by Cougars
second baseman Lindsay Miller.
College Misericordia took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when
Kirsten Lazorka led off with a single and moved to third on Lauran
Mushinski's double to left. Lazorka scored when Kristi Devens laid
down a perfect squeeze bunt for the early lead.
Neumann advanced to the finals after defeating second seed Arcadia
University, 4-3, and College Misericordia, 3-2, in the first day
of the double elimination PAC event on Saturday, May 6. College
Misericordia defeated second seed Arcadia University, 4-3, in the
