Dead Man Walking Comes to Campus

The College Theater Ensemble will stage Dead Man Walking, the play that is based on the book and film of the same name, on November 9-12 in the Meagher Theatre.

The play takes a hard look at the issues surrounding capital punishment, while focusing on Sister Helen Prejean’s ministry to death row inmates and the friendship she develops with one condemned man. A fast-paced drama, Dead Man Walking moves from prison to parole board to the media circus surrounding an execution. It introduces us to the victims, their families, and the murderer, as well as to passionate advocates for and against the death penalty.

The book was written in 1993 and based on actual events, Prejean’s experience as spiritual advisor to a convicted killer in Louisiana. The encounter opened her eyes to the execution process and inspired the book, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and topped The New York Times best-seller list for 31 weeks.

In 1996, the book was made into a motion picture, starring Susan Sarandon and Sean Penn. The film received four Oscar nominations. The play is written by Tim Robbins, director of the film.

Performances of Dead Man Walking are scheduled for 8 p.m. on November 9-11 and for 2 p.m. on November 12. Tickets are $10 each, with a $5 admission price for students (of any age) and seniors. To reserve seats, call 610-361-5455.
