Sister Margaret Lewis, OSF, Ph.D. |
Neumann will present Sr. Margaret Mary Lewis, OSF, Ph.D., with an honorary degree at May 19 commencement ceremonies. Sister Margaret is coordinator of donor development at The Catholic High School of Baltimore and serves as secretary of the Neumann College Board of Trustees.
According to Dr. Rosalie M. Mirenda, president of Neumann College, Sr. Margaret is being honored for “her dedication and commitment to religious life and the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, and for her superb scholarship and leadership in ensuring clinical excellence both at Neumann College and other institutions.”
Sister Margaret Lewis entered the Sisters of St. Francis in 1946. For 25 years she was clinical laboratory manager and director of medical technology education in Franciscan hospitals. She also served as vice president at St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware. For 13 years, Sister worked at Neumann College as professor and program director of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, and is credited with designing the College's program in this field.
She earned her B.S. from Villanova University, an M.A. from The College of New Jersey, a Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America, and certifications as a medical technologist and a clinical microbiologist.
Sister Margaret is the recipient of several awards, including the Ciba Clinical Parasitology Award, the Hycel Clinical Research Award, and the Pennsylvania Medical Society Benjamin Rush Award for Outstanding Medical Service. An annual Neumann College student award, the Sister Margaret Lewis Award for Excellence in Clinical Laboratory Science, was initiated in her honor in 1995.
The author of several professional journal articles and a textbook on clinical parasitology, Sister Margaret also served on the boards of The Catholic High School of Baltimore, St. Joseph Medical Center (Reading, PA), and St. Francis Medical Center (Trenton, NJ). She resides in Towson, MD.
