Sir Fergus Montgomery, a retired Member of British Parliament and former
private secretary to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, will speak in the
Meagher Theatre on Monday, October 16, at 10 a.m. In a lecture that is
free and open to the public, Montgomery will speak to Neumann students
and faculty on the topic of "Comparative Government: the UK and USA."
Montgomery served for 38 years as a Member of Parliament. In addition
to his post with Prime Minister Thatcher, he served as a member of the
select committees on environment and home affairs, chairman of the committee
on selection, chairman of the northwest group of conservative MPs, and
vice-chairman of the conservative parliamentary education committee.
His early career includes service in the Royal Navy from 1946 to 1948.
He then qualified as a teacher and was a schoolmaster from 1950-59. Sir
Fergus started his political career as a young conservative and was National
Young Conservative Chairman from 1957-58. He was elected Member for Newcastle
East in the general election of 1959 by 98 votes and was the first conservative
ever to represent that constituency. In April 1992, representing his third
constituency, Sir Fergus was returned to Parliament for a fifth time with
the highest majority ever achieved.
Montgomery was knighted in 1985. He has lectured extensively at colleges,
universities, civic organizations and political groups.
