Saturdays Only: Special Ed Certification
in Eight Months
Neumann will offer a special education certification program for practicing
teachers starting in January. Four eight-week courses, all available on
Saturdays, and an internship will allow certified teachers to earn special
education certification in approximately eight months.
The courses are offered in an eight-week format so that two classes can
be completed in a single semester. The program will be offered at the
College campus and at Holy Child Academy in Drexel Hill.
"Given the changing face of our educational environment, the increased
practice of creating inclusionary classrooms, and the growing demand for
early intervention services, students are facing special-education classification
sooner and for longer periods of time," explains Dr. Joseph Gillespie,
dean of education and human services at Neumann.
"The result is that more and more at-risk youngsters with varied
needs are in regular classroom settings. This makes it all the more important
for 'traditional' education teachers to understand and address different
learning needs."
According to Gillespie, adding this certification will enable teachers
to increase their own marketability as the need for special education
teachers increases and to become more effective in dealing with a variety
of learning needs.
The program's four courses address important components which prepare
teachers to deal with students who have special learning needs. Following
the completion of these courses, there is a 180-hour internship completed
in a special education classroom. This internship allows the teacher to
put into practice all of the theory from the special education courses.
Teachers can learn more about the program by attending an information
session on Wednesday, October 25, at a 6 p.m. in the Abessinio Building
at Neumann College or by calling 610-558-5616.
