Tyler Arboretum: The Horticultural Legacy
Betsey Ney, director of public programs at Tyler Arboretum, will speak
on the history of the Arboretum and its many programs on Thursday, October
12. Her lecture, entitled "Quaker Heritage and Horticultural Legacy,"
is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the Fred P. Meagher Theater, located in
the campus Life Center.
From 1681 to 1944, the property that is now Tyler Arboretum was home
to eight generations of the Minshall/Painter/Tyler family. In the mid
to late 1800s, two brothers - Minshall and Jacob Painter - created a plant
collection of more than 1,000 trees and shrubs on the homestead.
Today, Tyler Arboretum consists of 650 acres of horticultural displays
and natural areas that contain woodlands, meadows, wetlands, and a rare
serpentine barren. Widely considered a Delaware County treasure, the Arboretum
offers many programs, exhibits and activities throughout the year.
The program is sponsored by the Cultural Arts Forum, one of eight groups
that comprise the Arts Guild at Neumann College. Other organizations are
Center Stage Productions, the Delaware County Symphony, International
Ballet Classique, the Neumann College Concert Chorale, the Neumann College
Jazz Band, the Neumann College Theater Ensemble, and Stages of Imagination
Children's Theater.
General admission is $7. The lecture is free for Forum members. Immediately
following the seminar, all are welcomed to enjoy coffee, tea, cookies
and conversation in the Great Hall. For more information and to reserve
tickets, call 610-558-5626.
