Edward Lis, director of Catholic mission integration for Catholic Human Services (CHS), Archdiocese of Philadelphia, has asked Neumann faculty member Sr. Suzanne Mayer, IHM, to teach an in-service program for pastoral care associates.  Titled “Foundations of Pastoral Care & Counseling,” the program will run from September 2007 through May 2008.

Sr. Suzanne holds both a master’s degree from Neumann and a doctorate degree from Loyola College, Maryland, in pastoral care and counseling.

The Archdiocese’s program is based on Neumann’s “Introduction to Pastoral Care and Counseling” course.  The format includes a monthly gathering of three hours at one of the CHS locations, and six small-group theological reflection sessions offered between classes. Topics covered in the instruction will include models of pastoral care as related to service, ministry and community building, and pastoral service activities.

Sr. Suzanne, who has taught at Neumann for the past 15 years, said the Archdiocese is offering this program to enhance the knowledge of its pastoral care associates.

“Mr. Lis is interested in helping people in the various ministries acquire more of the skills needed in these ministries. A number of our graduates are working in the Archdiocese system and he’s been impressed with the skills they bring to their positions,” Sr. Suzanne said.

It was these graduates to whom Lis turned when looking for an in-service program to offer the other CHS employees. Over and over again, Sr. Suzanne’s name was mentioned. Lis said his employees referred to Sr. Suzanne as “the gem in the area” when it came to counseling programs.

“I found out that our folks really appreciated her approach. We have four graduates of the (Neumann) program and all have spoken very highly of the program and Sr. Suzanne,” Lis said.
