Balancing Act Helps Reduce Waste
On Earth Day, April 22, campus dining services launched its Tray-less Tuesday program to help eliminate waste in Crossroads Cafe. Students went through the cafe without using trays, taking only the food they could carry on plates and in bowls.
Research shows that when trays are removed from dining locations, less food is wasted, less energy is consumed, and less water and detergents are used.
As a result, the College was able to save more than 225 gallons of water and reduce the amount of food waste by 55 pounds. The figures are based on savings estimates of one-quarter gallon and one ounce of food per tray. Crossroads Cafe served 906 customers on Earth Day.
Dining services will continue Tray-less Tuesdays for the rest of the school year.
