Madrid Campus of St. Louis University (SLU)
St. Louis University, a Jesuit university founded in Missouri in 1818, opened a branch campus in Madrid in 1969. The Madrid campus has the feel of a small, private American University and offers a wide range of courses as well as extra-curricular activities. Located northwest of the city center, the SLU Madrid campus is very well situated; it is in the university quadrant of Madrid, with open views of the mountains to the north and west, and with superb metro (subway) and bus access.

Qualifications
Students who are Sophomores or Juniors at the time of application are eligible to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required for admission.
Accommodations
Visiting students live with host families, which is the best way to experience Spanish society to the fullest. Former students have said that being part of a Spanish household was the most rewarding and culturally integrating experiences of their time abroad. Students live in an apartment (piso) with either a mature Spanish couple or with a señora (housemother), often with another visiting student as well.
Host families are very helpful in showing students the Spanish ways of doing things, in showing them how to get around the city, and in improving their Spanish-language skills.
Some host family pisos are located within a 20 to 40 minute subway commute from the University; others are within a 15 to 20 minute walk. Madrid is a relatively compact city and riding the subway is safe, fast, inexpensive and efficient.
Wireless DSL internet access, as well as bed linens and laundry services are included in all host family placements. Since European washing machines are small, and dryers are not widely used, laundry is done on a reduced basis as compared to the U.S. The señora will do two loads of laundry per student per week.
Meals
Half Room and Board (media pension) is included with home stays. Students eat breakfast and dinner with the host family and are on their own for lunch. This is the most popular host family meal option because it provides a measure of freedom to the student during the school day and on weekends. Half room and board does not include use of kitchen facilities. Students learn quickly that Spanish families eat lunch and dinner much later than families in other countries. Lunch is the most important meal, served around 2:00 p.m.; dinner is lighter fare and is normally served around 9:00 p.m. A continental breakfast of coffee/juice and toast is usually eaten in the late morning.
