Living and Learning Center House Names
 

On August 1st, 2004, the sixteen Houses in the Living and Learning Centers were renamed in support of the mission of Neumann College. The names strengthen the students’ understanding and appreciation for Neumann’s Franciscan heritage. The renaming of the Houses also assist students in creating a living and learning environment that fosters a spirit of community, pride, healthy competition, and the initiation of Neumann traditions.

Clare

A contemporary of St. Francis who
also gave up her rich inheritance
on behalf of the poor, Clare was the
co-founder of the Franciscan movement and founder of the Poor Clares.

 

Gubbio

 

Gubbio

 

The town near Assisi where St. Francis tamed the fierce wolf that terrified the townspeople.

 

Greccio

 

Greccio

A town near Assisi made famous because St. Francis chose it for the
recreation of the Christmas crib on Christmas Eve in 1223.

 

Francis

 

Francis

Founder of the Franciscan movement,
an order of men and women dedicated
to living the values of the Gospel. He is known throughout the world for his love for the poor and care for creation.

 

Rieti

 

Rieti

 

A mountain range, with hermitages,
where Francis often stayed on his
travels to Rome. Loved by Francis
as a place of prayer and beauty.

 

San Damiano

 

San Damiano

The Church where St. Francis prays before the crucifix and hears the
words spoken from the cross saying: “Francis, go, repair my church."

 

Assisi

 

Assisi

 

The hometown of Saints Francis
and Clare located in central Italy.

 

La Verna

 

La Verna

A holy mountain where Francis would retreat often to pray and where
he received the Stigmata, the five
marks of the crucified Christ.

 

Umbria

 

Umbria

Situated in the “heart of Italy”, it’s a region of many landscapes,
natural resources and artistic treasures that inspired Francis’ love for creation.

 

Canticle

 

Canticle

Refers to “The Canticle of the Creatures," a hymn that Francis composed near the end of his life, praising all of creation.

 

Juniper

 

Juniper

 

One of the earliest followers of Francis.  He received the name Juniper because
of his humble life that reminded
Francis of the lovely Juniper tree.

 

Tau

 

Tau

 

The last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, signifying for Francis God’s everlasting love. Francis used the Tau
as his signature.

 

Alverno

 

Alverno

Francis came to this mountain
for solitude where he would retreat
often to pray and where he received
the Stigmata, the five marks
of the crucified Christ.

 

Bonaventure

 

Bonaventure

 

A follower of Francis who was healed
from a childhood disease by the
prayers of St. Francis and is known
for his learning and scholarship.

 

Padua

 

Padua

Birthplace of St. Anthony, blessed
follower of Francis and first teacher
in the Order, known today as the
“wonder worker” and helper
in the recovery of lost articles.

 

Siena

Siena

The city of Francis’ follower, Bernadine, who promoted and made
popular devotion and reverence for the Holy Name of Jesus.
