Music of the Civil War, Stephen Foster and the American 19th Century
Presenter: Charlie Zahm
Charlie Zahm is one of the most popular singers at Celtic and maritime music events in the Eastern United States. Several years ago, he sparked interest in the great collection of music from the War Between the States. Friends in the Civil War community convinced him that with his wide array of traditional American songs, he was more than halfway there to building a strong Civil War repertoire. Mr. Zahm’s interest in history then led him to disciplined research of Civil War songs, creating this wonderful hour of music. This is a great way to learn some history of the mid-19th century

"Peaceable Kingdom" - Lenape Tribes
Presenter: Dr. Kevin Cahill
This presentation challenges the traditional narrative of Pennsylvania’s history by arguing that the “Peaceable Kingdom” originated with the Lenape tribe’s peaceful coexistence with early Dutch and Swedish settlers, rather than with William Penn. Although Penn initially upheld this harmony through adherence to his Quaker principles, the relationship deteriorated due to the influx of non-pacifist settlers and the fraudulent efforts orchestrated by Penn’s heirs to acquire Lenape land. This tribe still exists today.

"No Greater Love: The Story of Michael Crescenz"

Listen to the heroic story of Michael Crescenz, Philadelphia’s only Medal of Honor Recipient of the Vietnam War. Michael grew up in one of Philadelphia’s booming post-war Catholic neighborhoods, distinguishing himself early on as a leader, brother, and friend. He was barely in Vietnam for two months when his unit was sent into battle against deeply entrenched enemy forces. Upon encountering the enemy’s 250 machine gun units, Private First-Class Michael J. Crescenz, concerned for his fellow comrades, picked up an M60 machine gun and charged the bunkers. He did not survive but his actions saved the lives of his fellow soldiers and allowed them to advance and ultimately prevail. For his valor
and sacrifice, Michael was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

What does a military aide to a United States President do? Come hear Pete’s description of
what it was like being an aide to Present Ronald Reagan. Throughout his 22-year Marine Corps career he spent all his time in the Fleet Marine Corp except for the three years’ service at the White House. Besides serving as an adviser, the Lt. Colonel was involved in combat operations in Grenada (student rescue), Beirut, Lebanon, the First Gulf War, and Operation Desert Storm.

The Middle East developed several of the world’s earliest civilizations. Tribal life and cultural forces with few natural barriers created a constant area of conflict. Early versions of Judaism and Christianity rooted before the arrival of Islam. With the emergence of several versions of Islam, religion entered the fray. During the 20th century water (very limited) and oil (abundant) both united and separated the nations. Dr. Ellis discusses the complexities of the region. Where will it all lead?

Come listen to Mike Rose, a seasoned professional magician who is also a magic historian and an award-winning author. During the performance the audience will not only learn about magic and magicians from the past, but they will see antiquarian magic recreated and performed. The historical facts and tidbits about magic’s past make the show fascinating and the performance of the magic makes the show engaging, unique and entertaining. Mike has published several books on magic including Joe Karson – Beyond Zombie which he received the Library Special Award from the Society of American Magicians.

Friday, December 19, 1777, dawned cold and windy, fourteen thousand Continental Army soldiers tramped from dawn to dusk along rutted Pennsylvania roads from Gulph Mills to Valley Forge. The soldiers’ arrival was followed by the army’s wagons and hundreds of camp women. Following the Drum tells the story of these courageous women who spent the difficult winter — those on society’s lowest rungs to ladies on the upper echelons.

Nicholas DiMarino
Coordinator of Cultural Programming
For the last 21 years, Nicholas DiMarino has served as the Coordinator of Cultural Programming at Neumann University. Before assuming this position, he taught social sciences and performing arts to seventh through twelfth grade students for over thirty years. He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of The Arts Guild at Neumann University. As coordinator, his position affords him the opportunity to coordinate all the performing and visual arts programs at the university. Mr. DiMarino is also the Founder and Executive Director of Center Stage Productions, a not-for-profit community theater ensemble currently part of the TAG at NU. Active in the community, he has been honored by many civic and educational groups for his devotion to teaching and promoting the performing arts. Over his very long career, he has produced and directed musical productions, dramas, and workshops for theater enthusiast of all ages.
