Academic Advising
Our Philosophy
- Academic advising is an integral part of our commitment to
educational excellence in the Franciscan tradition.
- Academic advising is a developmental process which assists
students in the clarification of their life / career goals and in the
development of educational plans for the realization of these goals.
- Academic advising is a decision-making process by which students
realize their maximum educational potential through communication and
information exchanges with an advisor; it is ongoing, multi-faceted,
and the responsibility of both student and advisor.
- The academic advisor serves as a facilitator of communication,
a coordinator of learning experiences through course and career planning
and academic progress review, and an agent of referral to other campus
agencies as necessary.
Special Features of Neumann Advising
- Each freshman is assigned to an advisor who also teaches
a weekly Freshman Experience course, which focuses on issues relevant
to incoming college students. This allows a personal relationship to
develop between the advisor and the student and creates opportunities
for problem solving as the student adjusts to the college environment.
This freshman advisor will serve the student's advising needs until
the student is accepted in a major program.
- Once accepted in a major program, each student will be advised
by a faculty member from that major or discipline. The advisor continues
to develop the personalized relationship as the student's focus shifts
from adjusting to college to preparing for graduation and career.
