St. Mary’s University College
St. Mary’s University (SMU) is a private, Catholic institution founded in 1850. SMUC has a total enrollment of 4,000 students and has many outstanding degree programs, including history, philosophy/religion and sport rehabilitation. In addition to academic excellence, SMU has a long tradition of sporting achievement, with facilities for dozens of sports on its 30-acre campus.
As this exchange program is integrated within a British university, it offers full academic facilities, including a Learning Resources Centre, and British instructors in all courses. In addition, extracurricular activities (including a sports program) and student services (such as a health service and a counseling service) are available.
Academic Program
Exchange students at SMU enroll directly in undergraduate courses along with British and other international students. Courses meet only once per week, in three hour segments. This program is particularly well-suited to Neumann students majoring in Athletic Training, Business, English, Communications and Arts Production. Accommodations
The Accommodation Office at St. Mary's arranges for the American students to live in dorms on campus or in British homes in the surrounding community. In most cases, home-stay accommodations will be within a short walk of the campus. Some host families take just one student, while others take a maximum of two. Home-stay students will have their own keys and will be free to come and go as they please, however they must be considerate of the other people living there.
Breakfasts and dinners are included for all students. Home-stay students will have breakfast at home and dinner at the SMU refectory with the other students. Dorm students will take both meals at the refectory. The SMU Refectory is open seven days a week and is situated centrally on the campus. It offers a wide range of food, all at reasonable prices, including a daily choice of main meals, vegetarian dishes, hot and cold snacks, burgers and salads. There is also a Snack Bar and a café, La Dolce Vita, with wonderful views over the campus.
