Frances and Wesley Bock Book Award for Children's Literature

The Library and the Neumann Institute for Franciscan Studies sponsor the Frances and Wesley Bock Book Award for Children's Literature, which recently celebrated its 25th year. The award is given to an author and illustrator of original work which aligns with Franciscan values related to a care for creation, a respect for the dignity of all persons, and an appreciation for the beauty of our world. Works created with the use of AI in any capacity will not be considered.

The award ceremony usually takes place on or close to October 4 (St. Francis Day) every year and young guests are treated to educational activities related to the winning story. Submissions are accepted between January and June 1 of each calendar year and winners are selected by committee.

To submit a book for consideration, publishers, authors, and/ or illustrators should send one copy of the title to:

Bock Family

Wesley Bock was co-owner of Kilner's, a store in north central Philadelphia that provided equipment, clothing, and supplies to religious institutions. Over time, he developed a friendship with the Sisters of St. Francis and provided support to the order.

After Wesley’s passing, his wife Frances continued to support the Sisters until the time of her death, at which time their nephew approached Neumann University’s Library to establish a children’s book award in their memory. Since the year 2000, the generosity of Frances and Wesley Bock has been stewarded by their nephew to sustain the award, and the hard work of the Library team and its selection committee have cultivated joyous celebrations to honor each winner.

The award celebrates children’s books honoring Franciscan values and the author and illustrator of the winning original work each receive a $750 prize. Works created with the use of AI in any capacity will not be considered.
